Wine of the Week: Snowline Pinot Gris 2008 May 31, 2010

Pinot Gris (pronounced as Pee-no Gree) and Pinot Grigio are the exact same grape varietal. In Italy it is generally referred to as Pinot Grigio; however in France and in the United States it is usually referred to as Pinot Gris. Even though the skin of this grape can have a reddish color once ripe, it is generally used for white wine production. The usual flavor profile of this varietal has notes of apples, lemon and tangerine with a light to medium body and notes of orange blossoms. In Germany this grape varietal is also referred to as Rulander.

photos.com picts 064.jpgSnowline Pinot Gris displays a unique style of this varietal with powerful characteristics of ripe honeydew melon, concentrated pear and white peach with a crisp backbone of lemon zest and aromatic orange blossoms. It seems to deliver the flavor impact of a Pinot Gris from Alsace with the balance and elegance of an Italian Pinot Grigio.  Perfect as an aperitif, but also pairs wonderfully with semi-soft cheese, poached salmon and arugula salad with a citrus based dressing.

Wine of the Week: Rogo Carinena 2006 May 24, 2010

Rogo is an intensely rich Spanish red blend produced in the tiny village of Cariñena.  This historic village is located in northern Spain and is one of the oldest protected wine growing regions in Europe.  In fact, the Romans founded this area back in 50 BC; however winemaking didn’t begin to thrive here until the Middle Ages when several local monasteries took a serious interest in producing wine.  This region is also considered to be the birthplace of Carignan (pronounced as Cah’-reen-nyahn.)  Carignan (also known as Mazuelo in Spain) is now widely planted throughout the south of France and curiously it is almost non-existent in its original birthplace of Cariñena.

March Madness.jpgSpecifically, Rogo has dominating rich and round characteristics of spiced black plums, dried boysenberries and ripe black currants with a slight hint of black olives on the finish.  Considering that this wine is produced from a field blend of Garnacha (Grenache) and Tempranillo (pronounced as temp-ra-nēyo) it’s not surprising to find these types of rich and enticing characteristics.  This wine could certainly become a favorite for almost any “die-hard” red wine lover (especially when considering the price.)

Grilling season is in full swing!

All thoughts turn to grilling with the approach of the Memorial Day weekend.  When asked, “Which barbecue/grilling book do you like best?”, I always recommend any volume from Steven Raichlen.  Called America’s “master griller” by Esquire Magazine, he is the author of numerous bestsellers including The Barbecue Bible, How to Grill, Beer-Can Chicken, and BBQ USA (a dog eared and sauce covered tome I consult to check temperatures, techniques and noteworthy recipes from all across America).  His television show “Primal Grill” is entering its third season with the official start of barbecue season (it’s here!)  His latest book is called Planet Barbecue (he’s covered the USA, now it’s time to tackle the globe!).  Check out his website for grilling tips, recipes, his blog, and to find out about “Barbecue U”.  This guy has made an entire industry out of barbecue and he’s the best!  Enjoy.

I’d be thrilled to toss some of the divine Copper River Salmon from Alaska on my grill.  It’s only in the stores for about a month-now through about mid to late June.  And boy, are they proud of it!  The best price I have seen so far is about $33 a pound.  As much as I crave the heavenly treat-especially paired with a fabulous Pinot Noir from Carneros, discretion is the better part of valor these days on extravagant food costs.  I may have to wait a week or two and see if the price drops to a more manageable level.  Look for it in better stores, and by all means, let me know if you find a better price.  Have tongs will travel!

Join us for an evening of wining and dining with a Latin flair at La Duni in NorthPark

Bring your dancing shoes (optional) and your appetite for good food, wine and fun and spend the evening with us at our next “Dinner Club with Jim White” special event at La Duni in NorthPark on Thursday May 27th.  Proprietors Dunia and Taco Borga have put together a fabulous evening and Executive Corporate Chef Julia Lopez has designed a wonderful menu.  It all starts at 6:30 sharp as our guests get to participate in a hands-on class that will show you how to mix the perfect Mojito.  Then, we’ll take our custom, hand-made cocktails inside La Duni’s private dining room for a delicious Argentine style dinner featuring a choice of wine or cocktail selections with each course (see the menu below).  Then, you’ll have the option to stay and enjoy a great evening of Latin Dancing and another delicious cocktail beginning at 10 p.m.  Reservations for this very special event at La Duni are limited to 40 people (and that includes the group from KRLD and Centennial Fine Wine and Spirits-our trusted ally and valued sponsor for the “Dinner Club” series–so, hurry!)

Three Decades, Three Chefs

Master Class. Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek turns 30 this year! To celebrate, three masters of culinary talent from the iconic Mansion kitchen both past and present are coming together for a one-of-a-kind culinary demonstration. Mansion alumni Kent Rathbun and Dean Fearing will join current Executive Chef Bruno Davaillon for the TACA Culinary Master Class.  The demonstration includes three-course lunch and wines paired by Mansion Wine and beverage Director Michael Flynn.
