The birthplace of Chardonnay (pronounced as Shar-doe-nay) was in Burgundy France where it is used to make such popular wines as Chablis, Pouilly Fuisse, and Montrachet; however it also serves as a major component for most Champagnes. In fact, if you find Champagne with the term Blanc de Blancs on the label – it is made with 100% Chardonnay grapes. Chardonnay obviously also found a “home away from home” in California and has become one of the most popular white wines in the United States. Generally, Chardonnay has a flavor profile that can include characteristics of apple, pear, pineapple, banana, melon, butter and lemon zest.

photos.com picts 069.jpgSpecifically, the Windy Lane Carneros Chardonnay 2006 is a medium to full-bodied wine that evolves on the palate into a lush and buttery Chardonnay packed with flavors of ripe mango, fresh pear, green apple and creme brulée with hints of honeysuckle and vanilla bean. For those who are a little more daring and want to have a little fun…..get a group of friends together for a blind wine tasting and include such names as Rombauer and Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay. You may be surprised at the outcome!
