Wine of the Week: Twin Flags Hawkes Bay Syrah 2008 October 25, 2010

Everyone has heard of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, but have you heard of a New Zealand Syrah?  Well, here is your chance to try one.  Syrah (pronounced as Sir-rah) is the exact same grape varietal as Shiraz and can trace its heritage back to Rhone Valley France. In the Rhone Valley it is primarily used in the northern regions to produce great wines from such areas as Hermitage and Cote Rotie. Syrah can produce rich full-bodied and opulent styled red wines with explosive characteristics. Generally, Syrah has a flavor profile of dried blackberry, dark raspberry, dark plum, pepper, smoked meat, and black olives.

LIOCO II.jpg Specifically, Twin Flags Hawkes Bay Syrah 2008 is an excellent example of what a New Zealand Syrah can deliver.  No one would ever mistake this beauty for Shiraz from New Zealand’s big brother to the north!  In blind tastings, this is more likely to be pegged as northern Rhone Syrah with the telltale onslaught of violets and black pepper spice. In the mouth, it shows a silky texture with flavors of blackberry, plum, blueberry, anise and vanilla. The finish is persistent and there is a re-emergence of the black pepper and a dusting of cocoa. This could easily handle spicy foods, but would be right at home with hearty cheeses, lamb or duck.

Centennial is a proud participant of a unique social movement known as “Fair Trade.” The intent of this socially and environmentally responsible movement is to benefit producers and workers in developing countries by promoting sales of a wide variety of products that directly impact the economic well-being of small and underdeveloped communities. Through Fair Trade, “Step by Step” directly improves the quality of life for the strong, honest and proud vineyard workers, their families, and their communities. The Fair Trade Certified™ program directly supports a better life for farming families in the developing world through fair prices, community development and environmental stewardship. What better way is there to participate in a humanitarian and environmentally responsible effort than by enjoying a glass of wine that is Fair Trade Certified?

“Step by Step Sauvignon Blanc is Fair Trade Certified™ from grapes sourced from 15-year-old vines planted in clay loam soils.  The grapes were hand harvested at peek ripeness then cold fermented in stainless steel tanks to maintain the bright fruit flavors. Minimal aging on the lees softened and rounded out the wine unveiling a mix of fresh grapefruit and lime aromas with tropical fruit on the palate, brilliant acidity and a delightfully, lingering finish.  The combination of vineyard location and age, trellis system, and Fair Trade Certified™ make this wine one of the best examples Chile has to offer.”  Excerpt organicwinetradecompany.com

Merlot (pronounced as Mair-lo) is a grape varietal that originally found its popularity and success in such classical growing regions as Pommerol in Bordeaux France and in Northern Italy.  Today, Merlot is used in some of the world’s most expensive and sought-after wines. Chateau Petrus from Bordeaux is generally made of 95% merlot and Masseto produced by Ornellaia in Italy is made from 100% Merlot. Generally, Merlot tends to have a flavor profile of plum, black cherry, blueberry, toffee, coffee, and chocolate.

Specifically, the Elm Tree Mendoza Merlot 2007 showcases enticing characteristics of fresh blueberry pie with delicate notes of dried ginger, ground nutmeg and exotic cardamom.  This intense flavor profile is framed with a soft, supple and lush mouth-feel highlighted with an echo of boysenberries and fresh ripe strawberries.  This wine could certainly become a favorite for almost any “die-hard” red wine lover (especially when considering the price.)

Wine of the Week: Domaine de Saint-Antoine Syrah 2007 October 4, 2010

Domaine de Saint Antoine is a 20 hectare estate located in the heart of Costières de Nîmes located on the western edge on the Rhône River and is one of the fastest rising stars in the appellation. The estate is owned and operated by Jean-Louis Emmanuel and his wife Marlène. The estate is situated in a very warm micro-climate which allows the grapes to achieve outstanding ripeness. All of the grapes are de-stemmed to create this Provençal Syrah that is brawny, ripe, bursting with black and red fruits and well structured tannins intermingled with classic Rhône spices.”  Excerpt from robertkacherselections.com

photos.com picts 1974.jpg Historically, Costières de Nîmes is considered to be one the oldest wine producing appellations in Europe.  In fact, a number of references site the first plantings in this region back to the fifth century BC.  Generally, the red wines produced from this region are elegant and lightly structured with flavors of black cherries, red currants and floral notes; however they can also be rounder and more expressive with characteristics of blackberries, ripe plum and blueberries.  The possible style variance is not so surprising, considering that the red wines from this region can be produced from a multitude of varietals including: Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, and Cinsault.
