Merlot (pronounced as Mair-lo) is a grape varietal that originally found its popularity and success in such classical growing regions as Pommerol in Bordeaux France and in Northern Italy.  Today, Merlot is used in some of the world’s most expensive and sought-after wines. Chateau Petrus from Bordeaux is generally made of 95% merlot and Masseto produced by Ornellaia in Italy is made from 100% Merlot. Generally, Merlot tends to have a flavor profile of plum, black cherry, blueberry, toffee, coffee, and chocolate.

Specifically, the Elm Tree Mendoza Merlot 2007 showcases enticing characteristics of fresh blueberry pie with delicate notes of dried ginger, ground nutmeg and exotic cardamom.  This intense flavor profile is framed with a soft, supple and lush mouth-feel highlighted with an echo of boysenberries and fresh ripe strawberries.  This wine could certainly become a favorite for almost any “die-hard” red wine lover (especially when considering the price.)
