If Zinfandel is traditionally considered the “workhorse” grape varietal of the California wine industry, then Cabernet Sauvignon (pronounced as Cab-air-nay So-vin-yawn) can be considered the “racehorse” grape varietal of the California wine industry.  Cabernet Sauvignon is consistently the world’s most popular red grape varietal and tends to offers explosive power and showmanship; however it can also sometimes be a little “edgy” in its youth. Cabernet Sauvignon classically found its place in Bordeaux, especially within the regions of Medoc and Graves, where it produces such world renowned wines as Chateau Margaux and Chateau Latour.  Generally, Cabernet Sauvignon can have a flavor profile of black currants, cassis, black cherry, black olives and plum.

For those who have heard of such rare “cult wines” as Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and Joseph Phelps “Backus Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon…..well, this will surely be an exquisite revelation for you.  The following excerpt is from an article written by Paul Franson.  “The gem of Turnbull’s holdings, however, are the 60 acres called the Weitz Vineyard. It lies on extremely rugged and sloping soil on the plateau above the Silverado Trail that contains Phelps’ Backus Vineyard, Vine Cliff, Dalla Valle and Screaming Eagle. That’s right: Above them.   From this site you look down on some of the most famous land in all of Napa Valley, hence the world. The vines here have to struggle to grow among boulders and stones, plus the shallow soil remaining as the rest long ago washed down the hill.”  Excerpt from Ilovenapa.com.
