They say, “Life is uncertain.  Have dessert first.”

La Duni is the place we would head first to fulfill this mission.  If given a choice, Cuatro Leches Cake might be our selection for last bite on Earth.  La Duni founder and namesake Dunia Borga and Espartaco (Taco), her husband and co-conspirator in their delightful pursuit of culinary expression and hospitality, have built a group of outstanding restaurants in the Dallas-Fort Worth area over the last several years.  Each with its own personality and appeal.  Each extending their menu well beyond the aforementioned sweet treats that have become Duni’s signature.

The original restaurant, la Duni Latin Cafe at 4620 McKinney Ave, set the stage for the success of their concept, and introduced Dallas diners to a whole new world of Latin delicacies beyond the prevalent Tex-Mex offerings in the area.  See what the New York Times has to say about the food and flair at La Duni in this recent review.

Next came the expanded la Duni Latin Kitchen and Baking Studio at 4264 Oak Lawn Avenue, where the team began to showcase empanadas and other South American taste treats that showed off the savory side of Duni’s considerable baking expertise and passion.

La Duni Latin Kitchen and Coffee Studio followed in NorthPark Dallas.  Here, one could while away the hours sipping aromatic coffees, noshing on artisan desserts and other Latin specialties, while tracking email and holding court with friends.  Or, slip in for a quick bite before heading off to the movies upstairs. Look for an offshoot of this wonderful concept coming to the Village of Fairview this summer.  For now, la Duni is delighting taste buds in the Allen/Fairview area with the new concept called Dulce, featuring cupcakes, confections, shaved ice (raspas), Latin Beignets (bunuelos), Latin paninis (grillados), coffee, mojitos, cocktails, wine, and much more.

If you’re concerned that there isn’t a la Duni close to you.  Fret no more.  La Duni is now part of a new, innovative concept called Artizone.com, that allows you to order great artisan products online and have them delivered to you within hours.  Ah, livin’ la vida Duni!

A quote from la Duni’s website sums up their philosophy:  “At la Duni, as in all Latin America, family is the foundation of life. However, we don’t just consider family our blood relatives, but anyone who sits at our table and shares our meal. Whether servant, neighbor, friend or stranger, during those precious moments, they all become family.”

Kitchen operations are directed with loving care by Executive Chef Julia Lopez.

Feast your eyes on some of the delicious treats and sights you’ll discover at la Duni with this special slide show.

Savor the Flavor

The 7th Annual Savor Dallas, a celebration of wine, food, spirits and the arts, returns to downtown Dallas and the Arts District on Friday and Saturday March 18th and 19th.  As part of the weekend’s cornucopia of premium wines and spirits (over 400), and great chefs (over 60), you’ll also have a chance to meet the coolest salad guy around:  Tom Spicer, purveyor of Spiceman’s FM 1410 in East Dallas (pictured here with fruits of his labor, or veggies as the case may be).  Besides offering his particularly pampered produce to the finest chefs in the area, and folks who frequent his Fitzhugh Avenue garden shop, now you and I can enjoy Spiceman’s delicacies, without ever leaving home to retrieve them.  Thanks to the magical powers of the Internet, and an innovative new company called Artizone.com, we can order our basil, French tarragon, tomatoes, exotic mushrooms, carrots, cucumbers, celery, lettuce, and more (oh, my!), online from the comfort of our own home, or office.  Artizone.com will deliver the products the same day if the order is made by a certain time, or by the next day for sure if the order is placed late in the day.  To tout their great gourmet service in the Dallas area, Artizone.com will be at the Savor Dallas Arts District Wine Stroll on Friday March 18th, and the International Grand Tasting on Saturday March 19th, showing off their services and giving you a chance to taste the products they feature and meet the artisans who provide them.  Joining Spicer at the Grand Tasting are Greg Geerts from VonGeertsem Butcher Shoppe, and the folks from Jellies, Jams and Butters.  The Artizone.com website also features baked treats from La Duni Latin Kitchen and Baking, Scardello Artisan Cheeses, and Italian specialties from Flavors from Afar.  The company plans to expand the product offerings substantially over the next several months, and its delivery area.  Artizone.com is a great addition to the serious foodie’s arsenal.  And, what a convenience for anyone who is busy (that seems to be all of us).  Come meet Artizone.com and some of their featured purveyors at Savor Dallas, and register to win a $500 shopping credit on Artizone.com (three lucky winners will be awarded).  And, visit Artizone.com right now if you haven’t already.

There is nothing like a Dame!

Susan Auler, Fall Creek Winery

Rodgers and Hammerstein said it in song, and the Dallas Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier says it with great food and wine!  Their 22nd “Raiser Grazer” is coming up Sunday March 6th from 5 until 8 p.m., at Cityplace Conference Center in Dallas, 2711 North Haskell.

This year’s Grazer, “Dames in the City”, is a Who’s Who of women who have redefined a new era in wine and culinary arts. The evening will feature luminaries of the wine industry and 20 well-known women chefs and culinary professionals offering samplings of food. In addition to the cork pull, a silent auction of culinary classes, private dinners, fine wines and more will be held. Guests will also enjoy specialty cocktail bars and ‘street performers’ at the event.  The group has raised more than $1 million for deserving women. Funds raised will benefit the Dallas Chapter’s established scholarship programs and endowments at five colleges and universities in Texas for women in the food, wine and hospitality industries.  Tickets to the Les Dames Raiser Grazer are available online for $50 prior to the event, and $60 at the door. The website address is www.LDEDallas.org.

And speaking of “Who’s Who”.  Read on to see all the great participants.  Thanks, ladies!
