Here Comes KRLD Restaurant Week (Yay!)

The simply amazing KRLD Restaurant Week is in full swing August 15th through 21st.  And, some restaurants will continue through August 28th.  Even a few will continue through Labor Day weekend.  Oh, and if that’s not enough, many will have a special preview August 12th through 14th.  It is the very best way to spend a hot August night.  A great meal, at a great price for a great cause–The North Texas Food Bank and the Lena Pope Home.  Over 125 restaurants!  This event raised over $600,000 for the charities last year, and millions through the years since it started in 1997.  Bring your friends.  Bring you family.  Heck invite the in-laws to town!  They don’t have to know you got a great three-course dinner for them for only $35.  But be sure and let them know you’re all helping charity with your dinner, because $7 from each meal purchased goes to the charities.  You MUST have a reservation to get this special deal.  The phone lines are levitating as we speak at the hottest places in town, so hurry and call now!  There is so much diversity, both in food and in location, that I wouldn’t sweat it if you can’t get a reservation at exactly the place you want.  The big brand name places fill up fast.  So, consider branching out and trying new places, or going to an area you haven’t visited before.  There are great choices on the list.  Like Carnegie Hall, not a bad seat in the house.  See all the restaurants at GuideLive.com or KRLD.com.  Please remember, if you make a reservation and can’t keep it, CALL the restaurant and let them know so you don’t keep someone else from dining out for the cause.  And, by all means take good care of your server!  At these prices, you should tip 20% on what the meal SHOULD have cost, AND order a more expensive wine.  Most all of the restaurants are doing wine and food pairings for an additional charge.  That’s the best way to experience the meal and the great flavor profiles the way the chef envisioned it.  So have a great time, and let me know what you really love this year during KRLD Restaurant Week.  Bon appétit!

NOSH and Perrier-Jouet are teaming up to celebrate 200 years of iconic wine making!  Attend a tasting of Perrier-Jouet prestige cuvees featuring Belle Epoque Brut, 2002, Belle Epoque Rose, 2002, and Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs 2000 paired with heavy hors d’oeuvres.  Tuesday, August 2, 6pm – 7:30, $25pp at Nosh, 4216 Oak Lawn Avenue, Dallas, TX 75219-2312, P: 214-528-9400.

San Martino Winery and Restaurant AVA team up for a wine dinner. Wednesday August 10th.  Emilio and Maria Ramos are bringing their locally made wines to Restaurant AVA. $75 per person.  Limited seating.  Call 469-698-9920 for reservations.  108 South Goliad, Rockwall, TX, 75087

News You Can Use About Easter Dining

Easter Sunday is April 24th. It’s the latest it has arrived in 68 years, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington.  Easter hasn’t come this late since 1943 and won’t be this late again until 2038.  “In both 1943 and 2038 Easter occurs on April 25, which is as late as it can theoretically be,” said Geoff Chester, an astronomer and public relations officer with the observatory.  Easter last occurred on April 24 in 1859, and it will not fall again on the 24th until 2095.  “The earliest possible date for Easter is March 22,” Chester said.  Easter is generally the first Sunday after the full moon that follows the vernal equinox.  That is the case this year but not every year, because the precise definition — used by Christian churches under rules going back to the 1500s — is more complicated.  For example, that definition fixes the vernal equinox — the first day of spring — as March 21, although that date can vary. The equinox comes this year on March 20. You’ll have to work on those eggs earlier the next couple of years. Easter falls on April 8 in 2012 and March 31 in 2013 before falling back to April 20 in 2014.

So, What about making reservations for Easter Brunch? We’ll start our annual rundown today, with more to come as we get the information.  Read on.

Valentine’s Treats for the Sweet

And, you know who you are!  Valentine’s is like the Super Bowl of dining for the restaurant industry.  Expect big crowds at all the popular places.  Know that you will need a reservation, and for the best table in the really cool spots, you should have called by now.  But never fear, dear heart, because February 14th is a Monday, the window of opportunity is wider this year.  You may confidently choose a rendezvous with your dearly beloved from Thursday February 11th through Valentine’s.  You might even be so bold as to include Tuesday 2/15 if you can sell it on the basis of your “great wisdom” in wanting to “avoid the crowds” and have an intimate dinner in your favorite restaurant (go for it).  I would event submit that you will gain numerous bonus points for making a Valentine’s reservation, and then “extending the romance” by getting you and your honey tickets to the Savor Dallas Wine and Food Festival on March 18-19.  You can enjoy the major part of the DFW dining scene in one night at the International Grand Tasting.  But first things first.  Here are some Valentine’s wining and dining suggestions that we think will be helpful.

Bite Size Bytes

They may have to go to three shifts at Nosh to keep up with the demand.  They’re so busy,  about every conceivable service option short of staying open all night has already been added.  Chef Jon Stevens tells me they are continuing to hire folks just to cover lunch and dinner shifts at his collaboration with Chef Avner Samuel on Oak Lawn.  Brunch is proving to be extremely popular.  And, with entrées like these is there any wonder?

Torn from the pages of a ubiquitous eBlast:

  • Duck Confit & Root Vegetable Hash poached egg & béarnaise
  • Baked Farm Eggs gruyere, potato, spanish chorizo & tomato
  • Braised Beef Short Ribs Benedict red chard & black truffle hollandaise
  • Caramelized Pear & Mascarpone French Toast “Sandwich” vanilla bean ice cream & pecans

Yummy.  Nosh is located at 4216 Oak Lawn Avenue, Dallas, TX 75219-2312.  Phone: 214-528-9400
