The best “man” for the job was a woman

Sharon Van Meter

So, a chef and an apprentice walk into a Michelin 3 Star restaurant in Lyon.  No, it’s not the start of a cheesy joke, but the way Sharon Van Meter met Paul Bocuse after she graduated from Le Cordon Bleu.  Chef assumed he had selected a man from the graduating group for his coveted apprenticeship.  Hear what happens next on today’s episode of “Wining and Dining with Jim White” on VOKALnow.com.  Fast forward a few years and Van Meter is one of the most respected chefs in the industry.  Her events center 3015 at Trinity Groves is booked solid.  She’s executive producing programs for the Food Network.  And, she’s opening a taco joint.  What?!?  Ah, but not just any taco joint.  “Tacos y Vino is half wine bar, half taqueria, and one quarter wine shop, that will open in a sweet bungalow at 213 W. 8th St.”, says Culture Map.  (Sometime the parts are greater than the sum).  It will open ASAP, according to Sharon.  Just a few city inspections to go.  Longtime wine professional Jimmy Contreras is putting the beverage program together with SVM’s “clean tacos”.  Get all the details in part 2 of our conversation with Sharon on the podcast devoted to introducing you to the people who make the eats and drinks you love.  Catch all of our episodes on VOKAL Media and on iTunes.  And, remember.  If anybody asks you what you’re making for dinner…tell ’em reservations!

Jim White and Sharon Van Meter

Meet Sharon Van Meter on this week’s “Wining and Dining with Jim White” on VOKALnow.com.  Sharon is a master chef and proprietor of 3015 Trinity Groves-the wildly popular event space in Dallas.  She talks about the evolution of Trinity Groves and her soon to open Tacos y Vino in Oak Cliff.   You’ll love the story she tells about meeting Stanley Marcus for the first time when she was consulting for Neiman-Marcus.  Clue:  he’s the one who persuaded her to re-locate to Dallas. Thank you, Mr. Stanley!  Oh, and you’ll get a kick out of her gymnastics story, too.  It’s the podcast devoted to introducing you to the people who make the eats and drinks you love.  Catch all of our episodes on VOKAL and on iTunes.  And, remember.  If anybody asks you what you’re making for dinner…tell ’em, reservations!

Four rounds with Rocky couldn’t be this much fun!  I loved “Fork Fight” at 3015 Trinity Groves.  It’s the development’s cool idea to pre-promote their new restaurants that start opening in the fall.  Each week a couple of “contenders” go at it for four, pounding, pulsating, palate pleasing courses, paired with wine, beer and cocktails.  The winner of the bracket style competition will face grande dame chef extraordinaire Sharon Van Meter (proprietor of 3015) for a big, winner take all (bragging rights) showdown.  Here’s how you get information about Thursday’s edition of “Fork Fight” pitting Souk VS Chino.  Go to BrownPaperTickets.com or call 214-744-0100.  Check out our video to see who won this week’s bout between LUCK and Resto Gastro Bistro.

There is nothing like a Dame!

Susan Auler, Fall Creek Winery

Rodgers and Hammerstein said it in song, and the Dallas Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier says it with great food and wine!  Their 22nd “Raiser Grazer” is coming up Sunday March 6th from 5 until 8 p.m., at Cityplace Conference Center in Dallas, 2711 North Haskell.

This year’s Grazer, “Dames in the City”, is a Who’s Who of women who have redefined a new era in wine and culinary arts. The evening will feature luminaries of the wine industry and 20 well-known women chefs and culinary professionals offering samplings of food. In addition to the cork pull, a silent auction of culinary classes, private dinners, fine wines and more will be held. Guests will also enjoy specialty cocktail bars and ‘street performers’ at the event.  The group has raised more than $1 million for deserving women. Funds raised will benefit the Dallas Chapter’s established scholarship programs and endowments at five colleges and universities in Texas for women in the food, wine and hospitality industries.  Tickets to the Les Dames Raiser Grazer are available online for $50 prior to the event, and $60 at the door. The website address is www.LDEDallas.org.

And speaking of “Who’s Who”.  Read on to see all the great participants.  Thanks, ladies!
