Pinot Grigio (pronounced as Pee-no Gree-sheo) and Pinot Gris are the exact same grape varietal. When grown in Italy, it is generally referred to as Pinot Grigio; however in France and in the United States it is usually referred to as Pinot Gris. Even though the skin of this grape can have a reddish color once ripe, it is generally used for white wine production. The usual flavor profile of this varietal has notes of apples, lemon and tangerine with a light to medium body and notes of orange blossoms. In Germany this grape varietal is also referred to as Rulander.
New Zealand is hardly the first place we think of when we hear Pinot Grigio, but this gem will no doubt turn heads with its body, complexity and balance. Initially, the Twin Flags Pinot Grigio 2007 shows a nutty, honeyed flower aroma but soon gives way to flavors of lemon bread, apricot, nectarine and spice notes. A lack of oak presence and moderate acidity keeps it lively and versatile. If thin, insipid grocery store Pinot Grigio keeps leaving you wanting, consider this tasty alternative.
