Back in business

“Boss” Top Chef Perfects the Craft

Fans of TV’s “Top Chef” get to bask in the glow of one of America’s most accomplished, and successful, chefs as he rolls into town next week to cook for fans of his restaurant Craft Dallas.

Chef/owner Tom Colicchio will be joining Chef de Cuisine Jeff Harris in the kitchen at craft | DALLAS on September 27th and 28th (Next Monday and Tuesday).  They will be preparing meals using some of their favorite seasonal ingredients, including Jerusalem Artichokes, Brussels Sprouts, Guinea Hen, and Chanterelle Mushrooms.  Make reservations by calling 214 397 4111.   Craft Dallas is located in the W Hotel in Victory Park, at 2440 Victory Park Lane Dallas, TX 75219.  For more information visit Craft’s Facebook page.  Complimentary valet parking offered.

Time to Nosh

Chef Avner Samuel’s new Dallas restaurant & bar, NOSH euro bistro and bar, is now open in the space formerly occupied by his ultra lavish Aurora (4216 Oak Lawn Avenue, Dallas, TX 75219-2312).  The expanded space includes a full bar, additional seating areas and a food bar that has been incorporated into the open kitchen. The menu, featuring casual European/Mediterranean inspired fare is offered throughout the day, 11:00am – 11:00pm weekdays and 5:00pm – 11:00pm on Saturdays. All you need is fries!

(Sung to the tune of “All You Need is Love”–with apologies to John Lennon)

All together now:  All you need is fries.  Everybody:  All you need is fries.  All you need is fries.  Fries is all you need. Second verse: All you need is ribs.  Third verse: All you need is burgers.  Fourth verse: All you need is cholesterol lowering prescription.  Sorry, that does not work in iambic pentameter or in the Lennon-McCartney pentameter either!  But, all kidding aside, you really can get a mound of burgers and ribs on Monday at the Dallas Hard Rock Cafe, and at the same price that John, Paul, George and Ringo would have paid when they unloaded from John’s psychedelic Rolls Royce to hang out and chow down with other pals from the British Invasion at Peter Morton’s and Isaac Tigrett’s original London Hard Rock Cafe in 1971.  It won’t be free (likely the draw for the Fab Four and The Stones, et al, who graced the Mayfair establishment in the good old days), but it will be close:  On Monday only (6/14/10), you can get 71-cent cheeseburgers and $1.10 ribs at the Victory Park outpost of Hard Rock to celebrate Founders Day (Morton and Tigrett).  It’s a global celebration by the Hard Rock Cafe.  Although the other locations are only offering the special menu pricing to civil servants-police, fire fighters, and emergency medical technicians.  In Dallas, anyone who doesn’t mind standing in line can get the meal deal (one entrée per person please, and just the ribs and cheeseburgers are offered).  It’s worth the price of admission just to check out the cool interactive tables at Hard Rock that allow visitors to view up to 1500 digital images of rock ‘n roll memorabilia, like letters from Paul McCartney, etc.  Inflation has caused the “legendary burgers” to jump in price to $13.95 and the ribs normally sell for $20.95.  BTW, if you are a civil servant, as listed above, you will be allowed to go to the head of the line in keeping with the Hard Rock’s desire to do a tip of the hat to these hard working and under appreciated individuals.  The restaurant is at the Southern end of Victory Park in Dallas at Houston Street and Continental Avenue. 2211 N. Houston St., Dallas 75219, 469.341.7625.  Like all the other restaurants in the district, business is a boom or bust roller coaster (up when there’s an event at American Airlines Center, down when there’s not).  So, support your local rock ‘n roll shrine and enjoy some burgers and ribs for almost free on Monday at the Hard Rock Cafe.  Remember:  NO nuclear weapons allowed! (quoting from a great souvenir button I got from the London Hard Rock Cafe in 1986).  And, by way of trivia, if you want to see what happened to the great stain glass windows commissioned to pay tribute to Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Chuck Berry that were part of the original Dallas Hard Rock Cafe, visit The Meddlesome Moth in the Dallas Design District (as reported earlier in this column).  You won’t get a 71-cent burger, but you won’t have to wait in line either.
